Where To Find Storage Controller Driver

Posted on  by

Seasoned Windows server administrators know to press [F6] to load a mass storage driver during the initial boot of the installation when booting from the install media. We are also quite familiar with forgetting to press [F6] and then getting a chance to do it again because setup could not find a storage controller if the device was not on the native driver list.

Windows Server 2008 introduces a new way that drivers are passed to the installation program during the installation process. The good news is that you don't have to press [F6]; the bad news is that it is a completely different process. The textsetup.oem files are gone (these files have historically defined the storage driver that Windows setup would use during the installation process), and you now effectively use a wizard when the time comes to determine where Windows will be installed.

I had a chance to install Windows Server 2008 on a few test servers that were quite old but met the minimum hardware requirements. In this particular instance, the Dell PERC 3 RAID controller is not on the native hardware inventory for Windows Server 2008. Fortunately, Dell provides the driver for download from its support site. Once I downloaded the driver and made it available to the installation program, the driver picked up and continued with no issue. The installation program copies the storage driver files as shown in Figure A

Storage Controller Driver Windows 10

.

Hi, I think I found a solution to one of your problems, namely the mass storage controller: The following driver is available on the Dell website, for Windows XP. I have the same problem with the unrecognized Broadcom USH device, under XP Pro SP3 that is. But if i loaded two drivers for a device with same major no and different minor no,and if only one driver is being used for the device, how can I find which driver is.

The new anatomy of the driver file to be processed relies on the .inf and .sys files, and any other files that are required by the driver (such as a .dll or .cat file). This simpler process saves you from having to press the silly [F6] key.

Issues may arise if you try to install Windows Server 2008 on an older server with a storage controller that is not on the native driver list and that has not had the Windows Server 2008 driver provided by the OEM. Most of the larger server brands will be current on this to a certain extent, but even for test systems, you should check driver inventories before embarking in any development effort for Windows Server 2008 migrations.

Dell Precision Mass Storage Controller Driver

I am having the same problem as Comfy (2) is having. My Western Digital 2TB drive had previously come up in My Computer and I was able to play video files off of it and everything, when my computer rebooted, is still is in my device manager and says its working ok but it is not showing up in My Computer any longer nor can I see its files. I have run the Troubleshooting Windows Software mentioned above and it says its working fine. Although I did notice that it is using Windows drivers, could that be a problem? Should it have its own driver from WD? I also can't update the driver as I am guessing its the latest one from Windows. I have tried everything that Comfy (2) has done. This computer is literally brand new a few days ago and is Window 10 x64 and the only other thing I can think of is that I think it is USB 1 or 2 the device but I have USB 2 and 3 USB Ports. Oh, and I don't get any error codes either, as its supposedly working.

Find Storage Units

Edit: I found out the problem through Disk Management, it is Offline: This drive is offline due to a 'Signature Collision', one or more drives has the same signature. In this can be corrected as Western Digital has this error and reply on how to fix it but not for Windows 10 only for Windows 8 & 7. I have a support ticket into them. Unlike Windows, it is very hard to find anything on their support site, basically when you put in a question even if its worded correctly the only answer that has any relevance is at the bottom of the page. I only mention that for anyone else looking that will go looking for this answer themselves. If you you have a Western Digital drive, download or start their Utilities Software and on the Diagnose Tab and the First Test says its good and the next two tests seem like they don't even run past the first green bar then fails it, go into your Disk Management, if there is a little yellow ! on it hover over it and it will tell you whats wrong with it. Hope this helps anyone looking for answers they can't seem to find when their drive is ok but, you can't see it in My Computer or see its files. Christine
